Laser and IPL Treatments
Probably no advance in medicine has had more of an impact than the development of laser surgery. Lasers work by emitting a powerful beam of light, which targets a specific part of the skin, modifying and improving skin quality. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is similar to a laser but emits a specified range of light to improve skin problems such as brown spots or red discoloration. Among the advantages of laser and IPL treatments are that there is no need for general anesthesia or hospitalization and there is no cutting or blood involved. Most treatments produce effects with NO downtime.
Laser Treatment Candidates
Lasers are effective for treating sun-damaged skin, mild acne scarring, age spots and skin discolorations, and many facial scars and wrinkles. Lasers can also be used to remove hair. Other conditions that respond well to laser surgery include treating spider veins.
Laser surgery can be used to remove or lessen:
- Wrinkles
- Age Spots
- Sun Damage
- Acne Scars
- Rosacea
- Spider Veins
- Surgical or Traumatic Scars
Nordlys by Ellipse Hybrid System
The Nordlys hybrid system is the most advanced and versatile Laser/IPL system in the world. This system is composed of a powerful platform and computer with 5 treatment heads with Selective Wave Band Technology (SWT®) able to treat 15 FDA-cleared skin conditions. In addition, there are 2 Laser handpieces.
What is Selective Waveband Technology (SWT)?
The raw light from the flash-lamp used in Intense Pulsed Light systems includes invisible ultraviolet and infrared light, as well as visible white light. First-generation Intense Pulsed Light systems filter out the ultraviolet light, but allow the infrared light through.
The Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology system has an extra filter to remove the infrared light (which is not absorbed by the target chromophores, melanin and haemoglobin but which is absorbed by the fluid in the skin). This ensures that the light that is directed to the skin contains only the wavelengths that are required to perform the treatment. Treatment with Selective Waveband Technology is thereby more effective, since it uses much less energy and does not require artificial cooling. The risk of side effects is also reduced.
IPL® (Intense Pulsed Light) Laser Treatment
Similar to the laser surgery techniques used at our practice, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy can be used to treat numerous skin problems, including sun damage, rosacea, acne, and hair removal. By stimulating collagen growth, IPL photorejuvenation can also reduce fine lines, minimize large pores, and bring consistency to uneven skin texture.
New Jersey plastic surgeon Paul LoVerme, MD uses the Ellipse Nordlys, which is the most effective and best engineered Laser & Pulsed Light aesthetic system in the world. The Selective Waveband Technology (SWT®) improves treatment results, enhances safety and is more comfortable. The introduction of the new and unique sub-millisecond pulses allows Dr. LoVerme to treat lesions not previously possible to treat, such as micro telangiectasias and pink (residual) port wine stains. In contrast to a laser, a multi-technology platform can be used for many different treatments. Nordlys with Selective Waveband Technology permits safe, effective and lasting solutions for:
Hair removal
Put an end to slow, messy and painful methods of hair removal. Hair is cleared in 4 – 6 treatments and studies show that after 10 years, 77% of hair is still gone. Though often referred to as Laser Hair Removal, strictly speaking it is not a laser. The technique is called photothermolysis and is effective for all skin types
Vascular lesions
Dr LoVerme can remove vascular lesions such as telangiectasias, hemangiomas, spider veins, “broken capillaries” and Port Wine Stains with the Nordlys Lasers and SWT handpieces.
Pigmented lesions
the Nordlys is able to remove benign epidermal pigmented lesions quickly and gently with long term results. The light is absorbed by melanin which resides in the keratin cells. The light is converted to heat which destroys the dark cell. This “selective photothermolysis” destroys the melanin-containing cell without damage to surrounding cells.
Photo rejuvenation
Dr. LoVerme removes age spots, telangiectasias, diffuse redness and uneven pigmentation on the face and body. Recent studies showed that women who had one photorejuvenation procedure per year and practiced safe sun protection had healthier, better appearing skin 10 years later (even with 10 more years of aging!)
Leg veins using Nd:YAG
Dr LoVerme is able to clear leg veins and other difficult vascular lesions such as facial telangiectasias, reticular vessels, resistant port wine stains and venous lakes effectively. The Nd:YAG laser penetrates deeper than the IPL, resulting in better clearance of these deeper vessels.
Onychomycosis using Nd:YAG
Treats onychomycosis (nail fungus) quickly and effectively, without pain and without the side effects of drugs.
Warts using Nd:YAG
Dr. LoVerme treats resistant warts fast and effectively with the Laser beam of infrared light.
Photorejuvenation with SWT® offers clinically proven effective treatment of the face, neck, arms, hands, chest and other large body areas, with NO DOWNTIME. This process can remove damage caused by years of sun exposure and minimize the effects of aging.
Introducing the FRAX 1550
Dr LoVerme is the FIRST physician in New Jersey to use this newest and most effective fractional non-ablative LASER. A non-ablative LASER does not ablate or “burn” the surface of the skin, but rather works on the deeper layers to effect change, resulting in limited downtime. The laser creates tiny, deep columns of injury known as microthermal treatment zones. The FRAX 1550 keeps the outer layer of the skin intact for faster healing and recovery. Your natural healing ability produces new, healthy tissue to replace the sun damaged or aging tissue, leaving your skin healthier and younger looking. Multiple sessions are sometimes needed. A full face fractional laser procedure takes about 30 minutes and is done after application of topical anesthetic cream.
Dr. Paul LoVerme uses the FRAX 1550 fractional non-ablative laser for:
- Skin resurfacing, improving texture, fine lines & wrinkles
- Crow’s feet
- Treatment of striae (stretch marks)
- Treatment of acne scars
- Melasma
- Treatment of surgical scars
